abortion
There are two views on the topic of abortion. They are most commonly referred to as pro-life and pro-choice. People that consider themselves pro-life believe that the baby should get the chance to live, no matter what the circumstances are. These people usually think that life begins when sperm and egg come together. The other side to abortion is pro-choice. These people do not necessarily agree with abortion, but accept the fact that it is the mother's baby, so she should have the right to abort it if she wishes to do so.
Abortion became legal in the United States in 1972 in a court case called Roe vs. Wade. Roe was a young women who wanted to have an abortion. In this case, the court decided that life begins after six months, because if the fetus is delivered before then, it cannot live. Although Roe was for abortion during the trial, she is now pro-life.
There are different procedures for abortion depending on how far along the pregnancy is. In weeks one and two, if a women thinks she might be pregnant, she will take a hormone pill. This is normally called a "morning-after" pill. It releases strong hormones into the body that would kill the embryo if there was one. This pill usually makes the woman very sick. The next procedures for abortion are between months one and three. The main procedure is the use of a vacuum/suction tube which sucks the embryo out of the uterus. This does not hurt the baby. The next proceduer is called curette. This is where the doctor will scrape the sides of the woman's uterus and it will unattach the baby. The doctors will then use a vacuum. One last procedure is used for months four through six (in Kentucky, this is only legal if it is to save the mother.) In this procedure, the doctor injects the mother with a salt solution, which kills the fetus because of the large amount of sodium. In order to get the baby out, the doctor will force the mother into labor or she will have a stillbirth.
Each state has separate laws for policies on abortion. In Kentucky, if you are pregnant and are under 18, you must get permission from at least one parent. The reason for getting the abortion does not matter. Common reasons that a woman would have an abortion are if she is too young, she was raped, she can't afford it, or she doesn't want people to know.
In the United States, there are approximately 3500 abortions each day. That is approximately 1,277,500 each year.
